Welcome to the Newsletter June 2026

Welcome to the June newsletter. Summer is officially here, but we are definitely not slowing down.

In this edition, we share upcoming highlights including a Save the Date for the final consortium meeting, a call for papers, a reflection on the recent OCAN Changá screening, and the Curaçao World Cup schedule.

Re/Presenting Europe Recommends:

De Afro-Europeaan follows Nigerian-British-Dutch Ikenna Azuike as he explores what Afro-Europeans can teach us about making a home. Despite a successful career and a loving family, he experiences a sense of being “divided,” and travels across different African communities in Europe in search of guidance and understanding.

Call for papers

On 27 November 2026, Rachel Gillett, Debby Esmeé de Vlugt, and Margo Groenewoud, are organizing a symposium at Utrecht University titled “Rhymes, Rhythms and Revolutions.” The event explores how cross-border and cross-cultural entanglements have shaped Dutch Caribbean societies in the twentieth century, focusing on the circulation of radical ideas through music, poetry, literature, film, and visual arts, as well as broader cultures of resistance and vernacular knowledge.

The symposium aims to rethink dominant dichotomies such as urban/rural, creolized/Western, and insider/outsider, while centering marginalized voices and generating new historical narratives within a circum-Caribbean conversation. The deadline for proposals is 6 July 2026, via the application form

You can find more information about the call for papers here

OCAN’s screening of Changá on May 23rd

As part of the ongoing Talkshow series in Den Helder, Groningen, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam, the Caribbean Dutch community in Amsterdam gathered this past Saturday for a special edition hosted by Stichting ProFor in Amsterdam Zuidoost. The event, co-hosted by Re/Presenting Europe, featured the first public screening of Changá by Prof. Dr Francio Guadeloupe, followed by a panel discussion and audience conversation reflecting on belonging, identity, resilience, and the lived experiences of Caribbean Dutch people in the European part of the Kingdom. Representatives from both the Windward and Leeward islands joined the dialogue, highlighting the importance of community, creativity, and mutual support.

Dr. Jody Metcalfe, one of the co-organizers, had this to say ‘As a continuation of the Het Talkshow series, co-created with Stichting Ocan, we hosted another successful event focused on Dutch Caribbean Belonging in the Netherlands. The screening of the documentary Changá, is inspired by the themes of the Talkshow Project, specifically the challenges and successes of living in the Netherlands and unpacking the complexities of where “home” is. The event, hosted at ProFor in Bijlmer, saw panellists Durwin Lynch and Kjelld Kroon engaging with the film’s content, as well as their own experiences and reflections, and foregrounding an audience discussion. We look forward to the next event on 13 June in Den Haag’
