Student Identity and Sense of Belonging: Descriptions and Representations of Diversity in Sites of Learning
Education is arguably one of the most important phases of a person’s life, as it shapes and creates an individual. This is exactly why the representation of marginalized and minority communities in the education system is important. This theme addresses education in formal and community-based learning sites, with the collaboration of various community-based partners. Students and youth are seen as agents who are in the middle of constructing their own cultural identities in both formal and informal sites of learning. The researchers compare and contrast students’ impressions of the representations in both sites of learning, in particular exploring how students feel represented – or othered. Our researchers aim to provide comprehensive ethnographic portraits of students’ experiences, renegotiate current educational practices, and develop more inclusive ones.

Their podcast series sheds light on how racialized academics, in their unique ways, have overcome obstacles, developed resilience, and found purpose and joy within academia. In particular, the series of interviews explores an under-discussed aspect of the academic experience for racialized people – the pursuit and maintenance of joy.
