It is impossible to regard the Dutch Caribbean islands and the Netherlands in the 21st century as separate worlds, each with its own strictly delineated “indigenous” culture, argues Francio Guadeloupe in his inaugural lecture. Such a perspective overlooks how people’s life trajectories are intertwined across the Kingdom in everyday ways.

Things done changed. Over 30 years after Hip Hop studies began, the genre has evolved globally—from 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. to trap, drill, and beyond—yet systemic inequalities persist. This Groningen conference examines Hip Hop’s transnational expressions, its history, and its future. Through panels, keynotes, archival sessions, and live music programming by Homebase, participants will reflect, debate, and imagine new directions for Hip Hop studies.

Re/Presenting Europe has co-sponsored this event and is thrilled to heavily feature in the programme with project members, Kim Dankoor, Sherlock Teglt, John Agesilas, Jody Metcalfe, Rachel Gillett, and Isabella Hall Allen presenting at the conference.

Can cultural history, as practised currently, be decolonial? If so, how? Come and hear Rachel Gillett present the chapter “Finding the Decolonial in Cultural History” that she, Angela Wanhalla & Giti Chandra contributed to this timely new book. Drinks and discussion follow.

Re/Presenting Europe members together with fellows of ecologies of belonging at the NIAS will come together to host a full day workshop on “No Transformation without Representation”.

The workshop will be guided by Jody Metcalfe, Farida Nabibaks, Jonathan Tjien Fooh and Shivant Jhagroe.

The third and final episode of the NIAS Studies of Belonging series explores how belonging works in academia, and what can (and can’t) belong. This in-person symposium will take place at the KNAW – Trippenhuis.

We are happy, as a project to co-sponsor this event and to have several of our researchers presenting at it.

Jan Willem Duyvendak will deliver a valedictory lecture as Professor of Sociology, titled “Where to Belong? Emotie, de natie en de sociologie”.

The lecture and reception will take place in the Aula of the University, Singel 411, Amsterdam. Doors open at 16:00. All are welcome to attend and do not have to register.

As part of the ongoing Talkshow series in Den Helder, Groningen, Eindhoven, and Rotterdam, the Caribbean Dutch community in Amsterdam gathered this past Saturday for a special edition hosted by Stichting ProFor in Amsterdam Zuidoost. The event, co-hosted by Re/Presenting Europe, featured the first public screening of Changá by Prof. Dr Francio Guadeloupe, followed by a panel discussion and audience conversation reflecting on belonging, identity, resilience, and the lived experiences of Caribbean Dutch people in the European part of the Kingdom. Representatives from both the Windward and Leeward islands joined the dialogue, highlighting the importance of community, creativity, and mutual support.

The next Talkshow will take place, following Amsterdam, will feature the second Talkshow centred on Changá as part of the ongoing Re/Presenting Europe research project.

Residents of The Hague are warmly invited to join the public discussion and actively participate in the conversation. How is life in The Hague? Do you feel at home and included in the city?
