Fostering Inclusive Engagement Event 2026

Date: November 17, 2026 14:00 – 17:30

Location: Senaatszaal, Erasmus Building, Burgemeester Oudlaan 50, 3062 PA Rotterdam

Universities aim to engage with society. Meaningful, inclusive engagement is more than simply reaching out or informing. It is about reflecting on who gets to participate, how equitable the collaboration is, whose stories are represented, and whose contributions are recognised. At this LDE (Leiden Delft Erasmus) event, we deepen our understanding of inclusive engagement.

Meet the keynote speakers for the Fostering Inclusive Engagement event on November 17th! Re/Presenting Europe’s Dr. Rachel Anne Gillett, assistant professor Cultural History at the Department of History at Universiteit Utrecht, and Sherlock Telgt, programme manager at ATANA Noord-Nederland, will present a keynote, titled: From slogan to practice: co-creative science for inclusion and impact. Rhymes, Rhythms and Revolutions

Date: 27 November at 16:00-18:30

Location: Johanna Hudiggebouw, 1.27 (Achter Sint Pieter 200), Utrecht

Join us on 27 November 2026 for a celebration of Dutch Caribbean history!

The “Rhymes, Rhythms and Revolutions” project explores how cross-border and cross-cultural entanglements have impacted and shaped Dutch Caribbean societies in the twentieth century.

At this event, you will learn more about the project and meet the scholars involved. After this introduction, we celebrate two recent releases: the book Surinamese Anticolonial Thought in the Twentieth Century (Bloomsbury, 2026), edited by Debby Esmeé de Vlugt and Peter Meel, and the album Antiyano Progresivo: Musical Experiments from the Former Dutch Caribbean, 1968-1986 (Soundway Records, 2026) by Mathijs Reinen (Rozaly) and Thomas Gesthuizen (Jumanne).

We close with a reception with drinks, snacks, and music from Antiyano Progresivo presented by DJ Jumanne. Anyone is welcome, but registration is required.

If you are planning to attend, please register here!

Esther Captain’s inaugural lecture

In her inaugural lecture Breuken en Schakels on October 14th, Esther Captain gave an enticing speech on the legacies of slavery. Moving through intergenerational rifts, transoceanic rifts and connections and healing, Esther highlighted how slavery has long term implications, both material and mentally. Through her speech, Esther demonstrated the importance of changing historical perspectives and continuous research on stories historically unheard. Her full lecture can be viewed on youtube or downloaded to read here.

Publications

The International Review for the Sociology of Sport has published an article by Re/Presenting Europe members Lis Camelia as part of her PhD, alongside Manou Anselma, Agnes Elling, Jacco van Sterkenburg, and Arne van Lienden. In this study, they examine how the baseball/softball field serves as a site for negotiating belonging among the Dutch Caribbean diaspora in the Netherlands. Read the full article here.
